Since the computers within the different subnets cannot see each other directly, this requires the enabling of NAT between the wireless and the wired ports, and setting up port forwarding for the computers behind the local wireless device. Contrast this with Client Mode Wireless, where the local wireless device running DD-WRT connects to the remote router as a client, creating two separate subnets. You could use a Wireless Bridge to transparently connect computer(s) in one room to computer(s) in a different room when you could not, or did not want to run an Ethernet cable between the rooms. Since the computers are on the same subnet, broadcasts will reach all machines, allowing DHCP clients in one segment to get their addresses from a DHCP server in a different segment. The two segments will be in the same subnet and look like two Ethernet switches connected by a cable to all computers on the subnet. I will state at the begining that I have tried this on two E1200 routers, both were hardware version 2.
I will outline the steps that I used here. The process for installing dd-wrt is fairly easy, but can take a little time to research. For instance, with dd-wrt you can setup VPN server and client services, multiple SSIDs, remote file system mounting, SSH, SNMP, and more. In fact DD-WRT, when installed properly, can give you features that are not available on some professional grade routers.
DD-WRT is a Linux based firmware replacement for many makes and models of consumer grade routers. There is an easy solution to many of these issues. I also found that signal strength was lower than expected at ranges of 50' or more. The 'guest' network feature is almost worthless. Sure they added WPS, a big security hole, and a 'guest' network feature. The features on the Linksys by Cisco routers have not changed in ages. When I was done, I realized that I was not able to do everything that I thought the router should be able to do. I got it installed and configured as a secondary wireless router for a home user. I recently purchased a Linksys by Cisco E1200.
